Simmer this blend and your kitchen fills with the deep, jammy scent of elderberries, the whole house smelling like something cozy being made from scratch. Strained and stirred with raw honey, the syrup pours dark, glossy, and berry-rich, with none of the dyes or preservatives of the store-bought kind. A spoonful a day is the old tradition; making it yourself is the magic.
Brew a batch on the first cozy Sunday of the season.
Includes one Elderberry Syrup DIY Kit, yielding approximately 12 ounces of syrup. Packaged in a biodegradable kraft tube lined with food-safe foil; stores for up to 24 months.
You will need: 2 cups of filtered water, ½ cup of raw honey, and cheesecloth.
Instructions: Add contents to 2 cups of cold filtered water and bring to a boil. Lower to a simmer for 20 minutes. Strain through cheesecloth and cool to room temperature. Mix in raw honey and store in the refrigerator; enjoy within 12 weeks for best flavor. For a higher yield with a juice-like consistency, add more water and sweeten to taste.
Suggested serving: Adults 12+ years, 2 tsp daily; children 12 months+, 1 tsp daily. Because the finished syrup contains raw honey, do not give it to infants under 12 months. If you are pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition, consult your healthcare provider before use.
