There is always one evening in October when it happens. The sun drops a little earlier than you expected, the air through the window turns cool, and you find yourself reaching for the matches without thinking. The strike, the flare, the first curl of cinnamon and orange drifting across the room... Candle season has officially begun!
Before you light your first candle of the year, here is everything I want you to know: how to burn safely, what's inside every candle I pour (and what never will be), and a few gift ideas for the people who light up your life.
Candle Safety: 8 Habits for Every Burn
A candle is still a live flame, and good habits make every burn safer, cleaner, and longer-lasting. Fire-safety data shows more home candle fires start in the bedroom than in any other room, and falling asleep is a common factor. These eight habits take seconds and matter every time.
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn. A long wick makes a tall, flickering flame and soot. Use wick trimmers, nail clippers, or scissors. (10 seconds)
- Let the first burn reach the edges. Soy wax has a memory. On the very first burn, let the melt pool reach the edge of the jar so it doesn't tunnel down the middle. Plan on about one hour for every inch of the jar's width, up to 4 hours.
- Burn no longer than 4 hours at a time. Then blow it out, let it cool for at least 2 hours, trim, and relight.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended, and never fall asleep with one lit. Blow it out before you leave the room.
- Give it 12 inches of space from curtains, bedding, books, and anything that can catch. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and away from drafts and ceiling fans.
- Burn on a stable, heat-safe surface. Our wooden tealights should always sit on something non-porous, like a porcelain saucer. Small amounts of oil can seep through natural wood; that's normal and not a defect.
- Stop when ½ inch of wax remains. The glass can get too hot near the bottom of the jar.
- Snuff, don't blow. A Gold Candle Snuffer puts out the flame without splattering wax or sending up smoke.

What's Inside a Megan's Pantry Candle (and What Isn't)
When I started pouring candles, I made myself one promise: if it doesn't come from creation, it doesn't go in the jar. Here is what that means in practice.
| Megan's Pantry candles | Many mass-market candles | |
|---|---|---|
| Wax | 100% pure soy wax, made from soybeans | Paraffin, a petroleum byproduct, or a paraffin blend |
| Scent | Pure essential oils, blended in-house by hand | Synthetic fragrance oils |
| Wick | Cotton | Varies |
| Color | Dye-free | Often dyed |
| Also | Vegan, paraben-free, phthalate-free | Ingredients often not listed |
| Made | Hand-poured in small batches in Albuquerque, NM | Mass-produced |
Why soy wax? Soy is plant-based and renewable, and it burns slower and cooler than paraffin. That means more hours of glow from every jar and a creamy, clean wax scent underneath the oils.
Why essential oils? Because a plant already holds its own scent, and I'd rather gather it than imitate it. Lavender smells like lavender because it is lavender. I'll be honest with you: an essential oil candle smells softer than a mall candle. That's on purpose. It fills a room the way a garden does, gently and truthfully, not like a perfume counter.
Why cotton wicks? A cotton wick burns evenly and cleanly, and paired with a ¼ inch trim, it gives you a steady, low flame.
Aromatherapy isn't medicine, and a candle can't fix a hard week. But it can change the atmosphere of a room, and sometimes that's exactly the invitation we need to slow down.
Our Candles by Mood
Every candle comes in a 6 oz or 16 oz glass jar with a lid. Choose by the feeling you want in the room.
| Candle | Scent notes | The feeling | Light it when... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn Spice | Orange, cinnamon, clove, ginger | Cozy, nostalgic | The first night cold enough for socks and a blanket |
| Serenity | Lavender, eucalyptus | Restful, soft | The last quiet hour before bed |
| Barrel Aged | Patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood, bergamot | Warm, unhurried | A good friend and a slow evening deserve the whole night |
| Mountain Air | Pine, cedarwood, eucalyptus | Crisp, focused | You sit down at your desk for deep work |
| Joy | Orange, grapefruit | Bright, uplifting | A slow Sunday morning while the coffee brews |
| Peace | Eucalyptus, grapefruit, rosemary | Spa-like, clean | The bath fills and the door clicks shut |
| Grace | Rosemary, palmarosa | Grounded, composed | Beside your journal, when you need to hear yourself think |
| Winter Solstice | Peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, orange, pine | Frosty and cozy at once | The tree lights go on for the first time |

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should you burn a soy candle the first time?
Burn a new soy candle until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar, about one hour per inch of the jar's width, and no more than 4 hours. This sets an even "memory" for the wax so the candle doesn't tunnel down the center on future burns.
How often should you trim a candle wick?
Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every single burn, once the candle has cooled. A trimmed wick makes a steady, low flame, reduces soot, and helps the candle last longer.
Why is there oil on the bottom of my wooden tealight?
Wood is natural and porous, so a small amount of essential oil or wax can seep through the bowl. It's normal and not a defect. Always burn wooden tealights on a non-porous surface like a porcelain saucer to protect your furniture.
Are essential oil candles safe around pets?
Some essential oils aren't recommended around cats, birds, and small animals. Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, keep them out of reach of curious paws and tails, and check with your veterinarian if you have questions about a specific oil.
Every Megan's Pantry candle is hand-poured in small batches in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with 100% soy wax, cotton wicks, and pure essential oils. Find your scent for the season in our Candles collection or browse ready-to-give Gift Sets.
Pour a cup, light a candle, and stay awhile.
