How to Trim a Candle Wick (and Why It Matters)

Candles have brought warmth, light and comfort into homes for centuries. They can set a peaceful mood, invite you to slow down, and fill a room with a scent that feels like home. But there's one small habit that makes a big difference in how your candle burns, and it's one most of us skip: trimming the wick.

Here's why it matters, and exactly how to do it.

How to Trim a Candle Wick (Step by Step)

  1. Let the candle cool completely. Never trim a lit or still-warm wick. Wait until the wax has fully hardened.
  2. Trim to 1/4 inch (about 6mm). Use a wick trimmer, nail clippers or small scissors. A quarter inch is roughly the width of a pencil eraser.
  3. Remove the trimmings. Brush any bits of wick or soot out of the wax so they don't catch fire next time.
  4. Trim before every burn. Make it part of your lighting ritual, not a once-in-a-while chore.
  5. Put it out gently. A candle snuffer puts out the flame without blowing smoke or splattering wax, and keeps the wick upright for your next trim.

Why Trimming Your Wick Matters

1. It prevents soot

A wick that's too long can't draw melted wax up evenly, so it burns incompletely and releases black soot. That soot stains jars, walls and ceilings over time. A 1/4 inch wick burns cleaner and keeps your space fresh.

2. It keeps the flame steady and safe

Long wicks make tall, flickering, "mushroomed" flames. That extra heat can crack glass containers or cause wax to spill over the sides. A trimmed wick gives you a calm, even flame.

3. It makes your candle last longer

A long wick burns through wax faster. Trimming slows the burn so you get more hours from every candle you love.

4. It helps the scent fill your room

When the wax pool gets too hot, scent burns off quickly. A well-trimmed wick keeps the temperature even, so the aroma releases slowly and steadily. This matters even more with pure essential oil candles, whose natural scents are more delicate than synthetic fragrance. (Here's why we choose essential oils for every candle we pour.)

More Candle Care Tips

  • Let the first burn reach the edges. On the first lighting, burn until the melted wax reaches the rim of the container (usually 2 to 3 hours) to prevent tunneling.
  • Don't burn longer than 4 hours at a time.
  • Keep it away from drafts, which cause uneven burning and smoke.
